How Champaign calculates your permit fee
The city charges a building permit fee using a fee table based on floor area, with a $45.00 minimum.
The fee table
One family dwelling, new
| Floor area | Fee |
|---|---|
| 0 sq ft – 2,499.99 sq ft | $345.00 |
| Over 2,500 sq ft | $435.00 |
One/two family addition or alteration
$6.00 per $1,000 of project value, with a $45.00 minimum.
Commercial and multi-family alteration
$6.00 per $1,000 of project value.
What counts as project value
Floor area (square feet). New one- and two-family dwellings are a flat fee by gross floor area (under / at least 2,500 gross sq ft). Additions and alterations are priced on construction costs: 'Addition/Alteration = $6 per $1,000 of construction costs.' Commercial new/addition fees use Building Gross Area x Square Foot Construction Costs (city table by use group and construction type) x 0.0016.
Worked example: a $350,000 new home
- Building permit fee: table value for 2,400 sq ft: $345.00 = $345.00
- Total before trade permits: $345.00.
