How Novi calculates your permit fee
The city charges a building permit fee using a fee table based on project value, plus a $40.00 application fee, with a $60.00 minimum. Plan review is a separate charge: 50% up to $30,000, 155% above that of the permit fee. Electrical, plumbing and mechanical work gets its own permits.
The fee table
Residential (MRC), new, additions, alterations
| Project value | Fee |
|---|---|
| $1 – $1,001 | $60.00 |
| Over $1,001 | $60.00 for the first $1,001 + $4.50 per additional $1,000 or fraction |
Plus an application fee of $40.00.
Nonresidential (MBC)
| Project value | Fee |
|---|---|

What counts as project value
Local valuation table. 'The building permit fee shall be based on the total estimated cost of the project as noted or as computed at 95% of the current International Code Council (ICC) Building Valuation Data Report exclusive of site work.' Residential one- and two-family = $131.97 per sq ft; private garages $53.30; decks $33.75 ($52.50 cedar/composite); finished basements $23.63 per sq ft.
Worked example: a $350,000 new home
- Building permit fee: $60.00 for the first $1,001.00 + $4.50 × 349 per $1,000.00 over = $1,630.50
- Application fee: fixed = $40.00
- Plan review fee: flat = $155.00
- Total before trade permits: $1,825.50.
