BuildingPermitCost How Elk Grove calculates your permit fee
The city charges a building permit fee using a fee table based on floor area. Electrical, plumbing and mechanical work gets its own permits.

What counts as project value
Floor area (square feet). Building permit fees are set by floor area (Major Category tables, per occupancy) or by fixed amounts by sq ft for remodels/additions (Minor Category). Valuation is only used for the per-$1,000 pass-through fees (General Plan Update, Technology, CBSC, C&D, SMIP); the booklet does not say how valuation is determined.
Worked example: a $350,000 new home
- Building permit fee: $3,147.00 for the first 2,000 sq ft + $104.00 × 4 per 100 sq ft over = $3,563.00
- Planning building permit review/zoning clearance (custom single-family new construction): flat fee = $67.71
- Development Services Engineering building permit review (custom single-family new construction): flat fee = $230.18
- General Plan Update Fee: $350,000.00 ÷ 1,000 × $0.23 = $80.50
- Technology Fee: $350,000.00 ÷ 1,000 × $0.40 = $140.00
- CBSC (California Building Standards Commission) fee: $1.00 × 14 per $25,000.00 = $14.00
- Construction and Demolition Fee: $350,000.00 ÷ 1,000 × $0.40 = $140.00
- SMIP (Strong Motion), residential 1-3 stories: $350,000.00 ÷ 1,000 × $0.13 = $45.50
- Total before trade permits: $4,280.89.
