How Honolulu calculates your permit fee
The city charges a building permit fee using a fee table based on project value, with a $20.00 minimum. Plan review is a separate charge: 20% of the permit fee.
The fee table
| Project value | Fee |
|---|---|
| $1 – $500 | $20.00 |
| $501 – $1,000 | $20.50 for the first $500 + $2.50 per additional $100 or fraction |
| $1,001 – $20,000 | $34.00 for the first $1,000 + $2.20 per additional $100 or fraction |
| $20,001 – $50,000 | $442.00 for the first $20,000 + $18.00 per additional $1,000 or fraction |
| $50,001 – $100,000 | $986.00 for the first $50,000 + $14.00 per additional $1,000 or fraction |
| $100,001 – $500,000 | $1,700.00 for the first $100,000 + $10.00 per additional $1,000 or fraction |
| $500,001 – $2,000,000 | $5,700.00 for the first $500,000 + $5.00 per additional $1,000 or fraction |
| Over $2,000,000 | $13,300.00 for the first $2,000,000 + $4.50 per additional $1,000 or fraction |
What counts as project value
Not stated in the schedule. Plan review and permit fees 'are based on project value of work in each structure'; for multiple buildings the applicant gives the cost breakdown of each building and sitework. How the value is verified is in ROH 18-6, which could not be read.
Worked example: a $350,000 new home
- Building permit fee: $1,700.00 for the first $100,000.00 + $10.00 × 250 per $1,000.00 over = $4,200.00
- Plan review fee: 20% of $4,200.00 = $840.00
- Total before trade permits: $5,040.00.
